Saying Goodbye to the Subaru WRX STi at the Isle of Man

15 Jun 2013 / 0 Comments / in Subaru News, Uncategorized/by Admin

The current Subaru WRX STI is a beast: powerful, capable, but something less than pretty. Despite its ungainly looks, it has made fans out of us and out of a large chunk of the populace. But it’s due for replacement soon.
So we took the opportunity to spend the better part of a week with the car in Ireland and on the Isle of Man as a sort of send-off.

Even in the five-door STI, which skips the massive wing of the sedan, there’s no mistaking what you’re driving, either from the curbside or from behind the wheel. The STI cuts an iconic figure like nothing else in its price segment–and it performs like nothing else, too.

Whether over the bumpy, often broken, insanely narrow, recessed roads of the Isle of Man or the comparatively wider, smoother roads of Ireland, the STI’s rally-bred suspension proved its mettle, absorbing the worst of the hits and smoothing out the smaller irregularities. The strong engine, six-speed manual gearbox, and scrappy all-wheel drive system provided the go and the grip to fly down the paved pathways at speeds that should really never be seen outside of a competitive rally–like, say, the Manx Rally. Or, say, setting the four-wheeled record around the Isle of Man’s Snaefell Mountain Course, where the TT is run.

Drink drive and lose your car

06 Jun 2013 / 0 Comments / in SIDC Club News/by Admin

Two thirds of UK drivers would be devastated if they lost their car according to figures published today (6 June 2013) as Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond launched a new THINK! drink-drive campaign to raise awareness of the consequences of a conviction.

The survey, commissioned by the AA and conducted by Populus, also shows that:

  • 31% of motorists are at their happiest behind the wheel
  • 32% say they rely on their car to maintain friendships
  • without a car 76% of 18 to 24 year olds would find it difficult to see friends and do the things they love – 88% would be devastated if they could not drive
  • 16% rate having a car as the best thing in their lives with the figure rising to 27% among 18 to 24 year olds.

The latest campaign will see radio adverts, pub posters and an eye-catching short online film drilling the message home that motorists face heavy costs if they drink and drive.

Even more roads lead to Wales…

06 Jun 2013 / 0 Comments / in SIDC Club News/by Admin

International Motor Sports – organiser of Wales Rally GB – is delighted to announce an exciting new partnership with the prestigious BTRDA Rally Series as another key component to its far-reaching ‘Road to Wales’ initiative.

In IMS’s strenuous efforts to ensure the new-look Wales Rally GB (14-17 November) is a fitting finale to both the globe-trotting FIA World Rally Championship and to the busy UK rallying season, every effort is being made to encourage top local crews to maximise their end-of-season opportunity to compete on the illustrious world stage.

To that end IMS has already offered no fewer than six front-runners from the MSA British Rally Championship free entries into Wales Rally GB and now it’s launching a similar partnership with the British Trial and Rally Drivers Association (BTRDA).

The REIS-Get Connected BTRDA Rally Series is the most popular Championship in the UK with over 260 registered contenders this year, and incorporates selected rounds of the MSA English Rally Championship and Pirelli MSA Welsh Forest Rally Championship within its nine round Series.

New Subaru Forester outperforms all others in new frontal crash test

06 Jun 2013 / 0 Comments / in Subaru News/by Admin
  • Subaru Forester the first to achieve top marks in new crash safety rating
  • Forester provides better occupant protection than all other compact SUVs
  • Rigorous new test designed to reflect the type of collision that kills and injures front seat occupants

The new Subaru Forester has become the first vehicle to score top marks in a severe new frontal crash test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the USA and the only small SUV to achieve the highest (“good”) rating.

In contrast to the Forester, of 13 SUVs subjected to the test, the protection afforded by 11 other models was found to be “poor” or “marginal”.

Alongside this we promised you that we’d be implementing a new website, shop and forum, which sits in front of a powerful CRM and CMS to assist. Conceived as a way for members and site visitors to easily access their existing social networks and communities alongside content from the club, the streamlined, structured and linear interface is more comprehendible.
